How 3Achain works

The blockchain trilemma

The blockchain trilemma, formalised by the founder of Ethereum, concerns three fundamental principles of
of the technology: security, scalability, and decentralization. It asserts that only two of these three characteristics can be provided simultaneously in a blockchain.

Scalability

Ability to exponentially increase the number of transactions that the blockchain is able to process.

Security

Ensuring that the data stored on the blockchain is protected against malicious actions by some compromised nodes.

Lack of a central control body and maximum geographical distribution of nodes.

How 3Achain solves the trilemma

The current limitations of public and fully decentralized blockchains (such as Bitcoin and Ethereum) are those of scalability and its cost.

In 3Achain, on the other hand, the nodes that make up the blockchain are known in advance because they belong to the partners. Only they, after careful selection, are admitted to the transaction validation process.

This makes it possible to use a consensus algorithm, called Proof of Authority, which is much more efficient than those used in public blockchains. The combination of a Network of authoritative partners and the PoA algorithm, therefore, guarantees at the same time unparalleled performance, top-level security and the absolute neutrality of the platform. It's not about replacing public (so-called permissionless) blockchains, but about complementing them with a permissioned architecture that guarantees the parties involved not so much through the integrity of the algorithm that validates transactions through computing power, but through the validation of blocks by an independent authority.

3Achain’s technology is based on the Quorum® solution.
Quorum is an open-source blockchain solution for business and industrial applications. It is derived from a fork of the public Ethereum client (also open-source) with several protocol-level enhancements to support increased scalability needs.
The fact that the platform’s code is open and verifiable by anyone promotes transparency and consequently trust in the platform. The open-source approach also allows it to attract developers from different industries to participate in its evolution.

There are two main advantages to using this solution.

The first is that the technology has been tested through more than 6 years of activity of the Ethereum network, which to date already develops over 1.4 million transactions per day, without this ever resulting in the loss of a single piece of data. Furthermore, by applying a Proof of Authority (PoA) validation algorithm to the same technology, instead of a Proof of Work (PoW), scalability is raised to the nth power, bringing the registration capability to hundreds of transactions per second.

The second advantage is that this technology, with its programming language Solidity (the same as Ethereum), is by far the most widespread in the blockchain environment. There are in fact hundreds of development teams around the world that contribute innovation in open-source version, and therefore freely available and usable, which leads to a synergy never seen before in a development environment. It's not about replacing public (so-called permissionless) blockchains, but about complementing them with a permissioned architecture that guarantees the parties involved not so much through the integrity of the algorithm that validates transactions through computing power, but through the validation of blocks by an independent authority.
